Here at Cavy Corner all the guineas live indoors in purpose built buildings.
C&C cages are a very popular choice for indoor guineas. These cages are made up of grids and have a waterproof base which is made from correx.
These cages are measured in grid size, a 2 x 4 C&C is 4 grids long and 2 grids wide. A 2 x 4 C&C is NOT the same size as 2ft x 4ft, the C&C is bigger.
Each grid should be 35cm and have 9 little squares to prevent heads being trapped. Lots of cheap C&C cages are sold online however a lot of these use the incorrect grid size and the cages are actually very small.
C&C cages can be bought, KAVEE or Ozzy Cages or a cheaper alternative is DIY using the correct size grid cube storage and correx bought from DIY stores. Lids can also be made or bought.
Lots of cages sold in pet shops are too small for guineas however there are some options that are a big enough size.
Guineas need bedding in their cage to absorb urine. This can be a disposable option such as Aubiose, kiln dried shavings or washable like fleece liners. Properly made fleece liners have an absorbent layer in between 2 layers of fleece allowing the top layer to stay dry. A piece of fleece, fabric or towel alone will get damp very quickly. No matter what bedding is used its vital your guineas have plenty of loose unrestricted hay. We use Aubiose then cover all of that with a layer of hay. Regular cage cleaning is vital for their health. Damp, wet cages can increase the risks of respiratory infections, fungal infections and sore feet.
