Overgrown guinea pig nails

Guinea nails need to be clipped on a regular basis.

These guineas were rescued with overgrown curled nails that had twisted in on themselves, no doubt these poor guineas would have been in so much pain trying to walk on them.

Overgrown nails put uneven pressure on the foot pads which can lead to bumblefoot, a serious bacterial infection causing an open wound on the foot.

Nails have a vein, the quick, and should be avoided when clipping as it will bleed if caught. On white and light nails it's easy to see but on black nails it can't be seen. Shining a light underneath the nail can make it visible.

Over time owners will get to learn how low they can go on dark nails. Lots of guineas will wriggle and protest about having their nails done, sometimes 2 people is helpful, one to hold and one to clip.
